Welcome to the pre-class lesson for Travel Sketches II!  We’ll talk about supplies – what’s used for demonstrations as well as what you might substitute. 

Before we start…a little housekeeping

I retain the copyright to the content you are learning in class. That means…

  1. Do not sell or give away the concepts from my classes – you may not re-teach my instruction contained or created within these lessons.
  2. Do not post a video tutorial or step by step photo tutorial of your own redraw of class content.
  3. Do not repost any handouts you receive in class.

However…I love to see students making strides and taking this teaching and personalizing it with your own skills.

  1. DO make your own designs and develop your own style! I love that!
  2. DO gift your creations made with these techniques, of course!

At the bottom of each lesson you’ll see some ways to share your homework and ask questions, so that’ll be handy for you.

As a late addition to class, I included a virtual tour found on YouTube of each of the gardens! Wish I’d thought of that earlier, alas it might have made my sketching easier! I hope you enjoy them.

This video shows the supplies as well as how to make the accordion sketchbook. The cover will be shown in the final lesson, and is made from:

  1. Heavy duty cardboard (back of an Arches paper pad or similar)
  2. Paper to cover said cardboard
  3. Doubletick tape to adhere the paper, or other preferred adhesive, then to adhere book to front and back covers

Pen and ink

Demonstrations will use a pack of Micron pens so I could adapt to different size tips for different sections of the drawings. If you have a couple sizes of fountain pen or other waterproof brand of pens, feel free to use those! (I used a .5, .8, and 1.0.)

  2. Fountain pens I recommend:

    2. TWSBI Eco Fountain Pen Fine
    3. TWSBI Eco Fountain Pen Medium

Watercolor pencils

Demonstrations will be colored in Inktense pencils; they’re an INK pencil so the colors will be stronger/brighter than regular watercolor pencils, but both can be just lovely. My favorite alternates are listed below.
  1. Derwent Inktense Pencils
  2. Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer Watercolor pencils
  3. Supracolor Watercolor pencils 
  4. Museum Aquarelle Watercolor pencils

Optional White Gouache (it’s used in one sketch but isn’t required)

 

 

 

Watercolor paper

We’ll be making our own accordion sketchbook in this class – however if you have another sketchbook that you know works with your watercolor pencils, or have a different style you’d like to make, go for it!
Demos are completed on Winsor Newton Cold Press but all these will work great:
  1. Arches Cold Press sheets
  2. Arches Rough sheets
  3. WN Cold Press Sheets
  4. WN Rough sheets
If you want to make a different sketchbook from pads, I recommend an Arches Cold Press Pad or
