Inked Seashells Preclass

Welcome to the Preclass lesson for Inked Seashells! Here you’ll find supplies listed, as well as a bonus video.

Before we start…a little housekeeping

I retain the copyright to the content you are learning in class. That means…

1. Do not sell or give away the concepts from my classes – you may not re-teach my instruction contained or created within these lessons.
2. Do not post a video tutorial or step by step photo tutorial of your own redraw of class content.
3. Do not repost any handouts you receive in class.

However…I love to see students making strides and taking this teaching and personalizing it with your own skills.

1. DO make your own designs and develop your own style! I love that!
2. DO gift your creations made with these techniques, of course!

At the bottom of each lesson you’ll see some ways to share your homework and ask questions, so that’ll be handy for you.

For those with limited markers, or who are missing individual colors…never fear! You can layer, or “glaze” other colors to create a missing one. (Also see instructional handout in Resources section below)

Pens

In this course, all pens are welcome! I’m listing a few here that will be used for demos, and a few of the inks that will be seen…but use what you like! We’ll work on mostly white papers but will throw in some dark papers to be able to use any white pens or sparkle pens you might have.

Dip Pens

About dip pens

If you’re new to dip pens, this will be very helpful information:

Alternate for the watercolorists out there

If you would rather create the drawings in this class with watercolor than with ink – you can do that! A few tips:

1. Get a dip pen and nibs as instructed above. The best nib in that set will be the 512 since it holds more liquid, so going the “DIY” route to buy a simple handle and a pack of 512s might be a great option.
2.  Create the same sketchbook out of a sheet of watercolor paper or by cutting up a pad of watercolor paper as I did with the drawing paper.
3. Mix watercolor in a small bowl or palette as shown below. You’ll need to dip the nib in to a level just past the breathing hole.
4. If you want any washes, add them first, since watercolor will lift if you paint atop the lines.
5. Lamp Black is a good color to use for black lines in watercolor – you’ll want to use nongranulating or lightly granulating colors for dip pen.
