Colored Pencil Hex Art Preclass

Welcome to Hex Art class! I’m excited you’re ready to learn more about those colored pencils you love so much.

42 videos lessons are broken up into groups – with several of the techniques in each lesson. They all build on each other, so I recommend you follow along in order to begin from the beginning and grow from there.

All videos are in real-time….and you should do a ‘practice’ version so you’re ready to complete final hexagons in your finished hex art piece.

Before we start…a little housekeeping

I retain the copyright to the content you are learning in class. That means…

  1. Do not sell or give away the concepts from my classes – you may not re-teach my instruction contained or created within these lessons.
  2. Do not post a video tutorial or step by step photo tutorial of your own redraw of class content.
  3. Do not repost any handouts you receive in class.

However…I love to see students making strides and taking this teaching and personalizing it with your own skills.

  1. DO make your own designs and develop your own style! I love that!
  2. DO gift your creations made with these techniques, of course!

At the bottom of each lesson you’ll see some ways to share your homework and ask questions, so that’ll be handy for you.

Before you start: helpful tips

I recommend that you gather a few items to have on hand in addition to markers (list is below):

  1. Optional: color chart. You won’t need one for this course, but if you don’ tyet have one I can recommend a Hex Chart for your brand, $5.99    See them all here.
  2. A notebook to jot down questions, ideas, tips to try out later. Especially if you’re inspired with an idea for later – “Try the pine trees technique on next landscape.” So you won’t forget you wanted to go try it out on more than a hexagon!
  3. A white pen – I’ve had a few times I’ve gone outside the lines or forgotten to leave some white. (My favorite is the first item, Copic Acrea, listed below.)
  4. Paper: use whatever paper you normally create your art on, with one caveat – you’ll want to send it through your printer. My practice will be on Neenah, and finished hex art on Stonehenge. Your learning will have the most value if you complete the finished art using your normal paper. (You’ll need to print out 8 pages, download will be in the first lesson.)
  5. A small binder might be helpful – you’ll print out an 8 page class handout, and you can either holepunch them or put them in plastic sleeves to keep your class materials together. If you took the Jumpstart class – put both class materials together! (And print out extra blanks of some of the Jumpstart color charts in case you want to test something before trying it for class!)
