It’s good as an artist to always remember to see things in a new, weird way. —Tim Burton
It’s a common question, believe it or not. Blank paper. Pens and brushes at the ready….and….the mind goes blank. What to draw or paint?
There are a million different tips to overcome artist’s block. But one of my favorites is….a little weird. I go to Holiday Insights and find out what day it is!
The website has a lot of ridiculous and bizarre holidays, as well as real ones – and most times, I learn something. On August 30th, I checked the site while my mind was in a whirl. I had to-do lists creeping into my view and staring over my shoulder. I had tons of projects that needed to be addressed. But I hadn’t had a moment to create – just for fun – in days. All work and no play, as they say….
I found out it was Frankenstein Day. That’s because it was Mary Shelley’s birthday! (I was thinking the day should have been in October, but what do I know!) Finding out that day led me to google it, and found lots of interesting facts about Frankenstein and Shelley. After that, it was a matter of a half hour to sketch in my teeny Copic sketchbook – it’s only 5×7 – keeping the size small and the strokes few, I was able to work on making greens and browns mix for a spooky skintone…and that cleared my mind to get back to the work I *really* had to be doing.
(Tip: Use the hashtags for these holidays when posting your work on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter – you never know, you may gain a new follower interested in that topic!) (Oh wait. Do I really want more monsters following me?)
Hint: Today is Newspaper Carrier Day as well as Labor Day…. how about creating something with newsprint?
ALL COPIC CLASSES ARE ON SALE THROUGH SEPT 10, 2017….NO COUPON CODE REQUIRED. HAPPY BACK-TO-SCHOOL!
