Watercolor Pencil HexChart Tips
PRINTING ON WATERCOLOR PAPER?
- Check your printer’s settings; “plain” paper settings using a bumpy/textured paper might cause strange double-inking or smudging; try settings for thicker papers.
- Consider picking up some 90lb watercolor paper; it will buckle with water, but can go through a printer more easily.
- Experiment with quality settings like “best” vs “normal.”
WHICH PRINTERS HAVE WATERPROOF INK?
- Inkjet printers are not water soluble; that means if you print this and try to use water on it, the black ink will move, and then contaminate the color in each hexagon.
- SOME laserjet printers MAY be fully waterproof. Test yours by using water on a brush to see if the ink bleeds.
- OTHER laserjet printers are PARTIALLY waterproof. That means you’ll be able to use this chart printed on that printer, but use as little water as possible to move the color.
- ALTERNATIVE: Take the PDF or a clean paper printout to your local copy shop along with the paper you want it printed on. The heat used in the industrial photocopiers is often partially waterproof - enough for a hex chart to work successfully.
HOW TO COLOR THE HEXAGONS?
- Fill or partially fill the hexagon with color. Filling half with color and using a brush to melt out the rest can show what the color looks like lighter.
- The more water you use, the paler the hexagons will be.
WHAT IF TEXT WASHES AWAY?
- Don’t panic. Print the hex chart on acetate (clear film) to lay on top of your colored chart. That will also make sure that any dark hexagons can be read as well.
