I’m glad you’re here for the preclass lesson for Coral Enchantment! This is the third class in this series; originally inspired by wanting “more” space on a card for making scenes!
Supplies here are ones you may well already have; if you’ve used markers long enough to get to a Level 4 you might be one of those with full-set syndrome like me! Please know that the colors listed are those used in the demonstrations, and you are most welcome to choose similar colors – or look at the value (light/darkness) of the colors and see if you have something of the same value in another hue; just because one coral is drawn in greens doesn’t mean it can’t be purples!
I retain the copyright to the content you are learning in class. That means…
However…I love to see students making strides and taking this teaching and personalizing it with your own skills.
At the bottom of each lesson you’ll see some ways to share your homework and ask questions, so that’ll be handy for you.
While this course is demonstrated in Copic Markers, it’s certainly possible to use other brands; just know it might take some creative technique! If your brand is more saturated, less saturated, or the colors are off in value (hue is a little less important)….then it’s possible you’ll have a different result. But I bet you can pull that off with ease! If you’re at a level 4, you’re very capable and I have faith in you!
Below I’ve listed the colors I suggest for Olo, though some of those have far more value than Copics, so use less color til you’re sure what it’ll do.
The Blick link is a “one page” link to all supplies EXCEPT paper. (I recommend Neenah cardstock, 80lb. but use what you like best!) You can use that page at Blick to make a checklist, it might be easier than the text below.

The photos in this slider will be seen in each lesson – so you’ll know which colors to have at the ready!
The demonstrations are created on Neenah Cardstock (Solar White ream) but you use anything you’d like! It’s up to you.
The course does need a white gel pen – I personally love a Signo Uniball Gel Pen (BLICK / AMAZON) but you can use your favorite brand whatever it is.
A white pencil will also be a help, either one…
If you’re busily getting your markers reinked, you might like to pick up a pair of tweezer with grippy teeth:
A great thing to watch while reinking your markers and getting ready is this documentary. There are a gajillion videos about coral reefs, but this one I thought was especially good. Most all of the corals we’ll be drawing got a mention or a quick camera shot, hopefully you can pick them out! (These were not references for the class, I only found this one after completing all the videos).
Artventure is an active art community of thousands of artists that I run on Mighty Networks via an app or the web. You’ll be right in my pocket for quick feedback and answers to questions and bonus zoom calls! Free to join.
Post wherever you like to share, and tag @sandyallnock – I love to see your work! Posting lets your friends know which class you’re taking. They might enjoy learning as well!
